Life on the L&D Floor
Labor & Delivery nursing is unlike any other specialty. One moment it's calm, the next you're rushing to support a mom through an unexpected complication or celebrating a brand new life entering the world. Your shift bag needs to be ready for all of it.
Whether you're a seasoned L&D nurse or just starting out in the specialty, here's a practical guide to what to pack for your shift — including the little extras that make a big difference.
The L&D Nurse Shift Essentials
1. Comfortable Scrubs
L&D nurses are on their feet constantly — supporting laboring moms, assisting with deliveries, and moving quickly between rooms. Invest in scrubs that are soft, stretchy, and easy to move in. Moisture-wicking fabric is a bonus for those long, active shifts.
2. Supportive Shoes
Your feet will thank you. Clogs or sneakers with good arch support are the gold standard on the L&D floor. Look for styles that are easy to clean — because L&D can get messy!
3. A Reliable Badge Reel
You'll be scanning in and out constantly. A fun, retractable badge reel keeps your ID accessible and adds a little personality to your scrubs.
4. Snacks & a Water Bottle
Breaks aren't always guaranteed in L&D. Pack high-protein snacks like nuts, protein bars, or cheese sticks that you can eat quickly between patients. A large insulated water bottle keeps you hydrated through even the busiest shifts.
5. A Good Pen (or Five)
Pens disappear in hospitals. Pack more than you think you need.
6. Hand Lotion
Frequent handwashing and glove use can leave your hands dry and cracked. A small, unscented lotion in your pocket is a lifesaver.
7. A Meaningful Hair Accessory
Hair has to be up and out of the way in L&D — but that doesn't mean it can't be cute. A soft, comfortable headband or scrunchie keeps your hair secure without the headache. Bonus points if it has a fun L&D or baby-themed print that sparks joy (and conversation with your patients!).
At Headband Studio, our Labor & Delivery nurse headbands are handmade with soft, stretchy fabric designed to stay comfortable through your entire shift. From baby feet prints to newborn stripes, there's a style for every L&D nurse.
8. A Small Personal Care Kit
Lip balm, a hair tie backup, a travel-size deodorant, and a few ibuprofen can make a 12-hour shift much more bearable. Keep a small pouch in your bag for the essentials.
9. A Positive Mindset
Okay, you can't pack this one — but it's the most important thing you bring to every shift. L&D nursing is emotionally demanding and incredibly rewarding. The families you support will never forget you.
A Note for New L&D Nurses
If you're just starting out in Labor & Delivery, give yourself grace. The specialty has a steep learning curve, but the community of L&D nurses is one of the most supportive in healthcare. Lean on your colleagues, ask questions, and remember why you chose this specialty.
And treat yourself to a headband that makes you smile every time you put it on — you deserve it.
